One Minute Later – Invaders 26 Cover Re-Imagined
This was one of the most unique commissions I’ve had the pleasure of working on. It’s part of ONE MINUTE LATER, a themed cover re-creation collection by an avid original art collector named Michael Finn. ERB Princess of Mars – John Carter, Dejah Thoris & Tars Tarkas
As mentioned in posted in an earlier post, I tried my hand at illustrating my own interpretation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ vision for the characters, working entirely from his text in Princess of Mars.
Some of my notes from the text:
Tars Tarkas, an adult male Thark
– 40′ long metal tipped spear
– protruded eyes on extreme sides of the head
– vertical slits for nose
– tusks used for fighting
– 15 ft tall, 6 limbed, no nails
– no hair, smooth build, dark olive skin
– Jeds & Jeddaks wear feather fur lined silk short cape
– red iris, white eye, gleaming white teeth
A Thoat
– 8-legged creature
– Can walk very quietly
– Hairless
– Shiny
– No hoofs or nails
– Tail flare out wider at the tip than the base
Michael, He Always in Bad Mood!
Some of my favorite things in life are great stories, kickass drawings, natural humor, and inspirational moments. When my lovely friends introduced me to this video by Kris Vallotton, I was inspired, deeply moved, and left with such strong visual impression in my mind that I had to put ink to paper to express it. It was exhilarating to illustrate a kingdom story about kingdom people. Thank you Kathy Graham Kyles, my wonderful sister and a fantastic fellow artist, for introducing me to the video as well as Kris Vallotton! 😅

A British author Barry Nugent had commissioned me a while back to create the cover to his self-published novel Fallen Heroes. It was my first-ever book cover design and thoroughly enjoyed working with Barry through the process. He was both gracious and patient in turning to me for the cover to the sequel, Forgotten Warriors.
